We finally had a chance to drive the current Ford Explorer in this Limited 4WD version. It had been a long while since I last drove one of these and I must say, I was pleasently surprised. The Ford Explorer has truly become a quality vehicle, offering plenty of space and versatility at a high level of comfort and perceived quality.

Previous experiences in this category were predominantly with a few GM vehicles and mostly Asian products, and the GM products never fared too well in comparison to the quality and performance of the Asian offerings, but the Ford Explorer proves that the US is capable of producing at that higher standard and delivering products that can compete.

Ford is clearly building on it’s experience in owning the Land Rover/Range Rover brand and how this was moving in a much higher market segment than the Ford products were at that time. By clearly using that experience to influence the exterior and interior designs of the Explorer and aid it in getting the perceived quality level away from previous Ford tendencies to actually a high standard, it is managing to reach goals that were unattainable for Ford before.
