The Peugeot 3008 falls into one of the new “cross-over” segments, specifically between an SUV and an MPV. From the essence of it it is more of an MPV, based on a front wheel drive floor-pan of the Peugeot 308, but with distinct styling features that are supposed to give it a “tough SUV” look. This is particularly obvious in the design of the front end, with its bold Peugeot brand Identity grille flanked by large air intakes.

Due to the obvious weather restrictions, Europe was blasted by a fierce snow storm at the time of our evaluation, and the lack of the optional “Grip Control”, we were unable to determine how truly off road worthy this 3008 really is, but needless to say, we did not get stuck anywhere, otherwise there would be a picture or two of that in the gallery.
We were able to asses that this Peugeot has all the driving capabilities of a competent road going car, similar to its 308 brethren, combined with some of the rough characteristics associated with an SUV, and the practicality of an MPV. In as far as how this competes with true SUV’s and true MPV’s is difficult to determine, since the 3008 clearly is the cross-over mixture of all of these, neither meat nor fish, but a nice alternative to both.

Driving the 3008 transfers the impression of driving a large, high quality SUV, without compromising on the user-friendliness of a conventional car. The fit and finish in the cockpit is such that you deem yourself in a much higher-class vehicle. There is a Heads-Up-Display (HUD), there are tight gaps between the various panels, the sounds are nicely dampened, the perceived quality is excellent. The quality is definetly equal to the perceived “German Engineering” moniker. The ventilated center console reminds me of an Audi R8, which is not a bad association at all.

The exterior does take some getting used to, since it is rather in-your-face boldness without a true SUV pedigree, but the more we lived with it, the more we “got it” and the more we liked it. The first association is of a 308 in the wrong scale, but as soon as the SUV strengths are showing, the boldness of the front begins to make more sense. Combined with the Peugeot signature crisp lines and soft sculpted surfaces makes for a less intimidating car than a conventional American type SUV, which, with the current trend to banish said cars from town centers, makes for a very sensible alternative.

And of course, we LOVED the Peugeot Panorama glass roof. Aside from the functionality, it gives the car a true sense of space, and, in these dark wintry days, provides a bright alternative overcoming the obvious thoughts of doom and gloom that pop up in this season.
