Ford gained a whole new sheen in 1955 when the company coated the Futura concept car with pearlescent paint. Ford was among the first to show off this new paint technique, which consisted of adding crushed pearls to paint.

This historic Ford video gives a good insight into true concept car design and how it can influence the further future of a company’s design strategy. In contrast to most current ‘concept cars’, which are little more than next years model with some ‘weird things’ added to make it seem further away than it really is.
The BMW Next 100 concept brought out how refreshing it it can be for designers to be allowed to think further ahead. All too often designers are forced to think next generation bread and butter designs, and oh, as a little bonus, you can make a fancy version of it as a ‘concept’ and flatter your ego. THAT was NEVER the intention of concept vehicles, and the video above clarifies this even more.
